Every year, the “experts” tell us what they expect the new trends will be in food and grocery
retail. This month I thought I would share two articles that I feel
could be on the mark for 2013. One link provides an in-store, merchandising perspective
while the NPR link focuses more on which food types are predicted to be hot this year.
Here are a few of the trends mentioned:
- healthy snacks, mini-meals and breakfast foods are increasing in importance
- more grocery shoppers are millennials and men
- Boomers are shopping to combat health issues - e.g. antioxidant
fruits/vegetables and whole grains
- Asian influence on food continues to grow
- the farm-to-table movement remains strong
Shown below are merchandising ideas that address some of these trends. I intend to cover a few of
these topics in more detail over the coming months.
Until next time,
Michael Smith
